This is the Bull Terrier.
According the AKC website, the Bull Terrier is:
Among the most comical and mischievous citizens of dogdom, the Bull Terrier is playful and endearing, sometimes stubborn, but always devoted. These unique 'eggheads' are exuberant, muscular companions who thrive on affection and exercise. Bull Terriers are robust, big-boned terriers who move with a jaunty stride suggesting agility and power. The breed's hallmark is a long, egg-shaped head with erect and pointed ears, and small, triangular eyes that glisten with good humor. Coats come in two types: white; and any other color (including an attractive brindle striping), either solid or with white markings. A well-made BT is the picture of muscular determination and balance. There are four keys to BT happiness: early socialization with dogs and people; firm but loving training; ample exercise; and lots of quality time with his adored humans. If these requirements are met, there is no more loyal, lovable, and entertaining companion. This is the ultimate 'personality breed.' from the AKC website.
I was first introduced to the Bull Terrier as a child from the movie "It is a Dog's Life"
Very sad movie because of the dog fighting, but the breed fascinated me. I have never owned a Bull Terrier and I do not see them often.
The Bull Terrier breed was developed in the 1860s because of a man named James Hinks in Birmingham, England who began breeding the dogs for the look we see today. At that time the breed had an all white coat and was known as "A Gentleman's Dog". It was popular for a gentleman to ride in his carriage with a Bull Terrier by his side.
The Bull Terrier came to the USA and was a recognized breed by the AKC in 1885.
The Bull Terrier Club began in the USA in 1897.
General Patton owned a Bull Terrier named Willie. Willie was often seen with General Patton. When the General died, they say Willie mourned for him.
How sad is this photo below.

A Bull Terrier is the breed of dog used as the Target Mascot. Obviously the red Target around his eye is painted on.

Another famous dog that I thought was a Bull Terrier had a natural black circle around his eye. The dog was named Pal, but everyone knew him as Pete or Petey in the Little Rascals shows. This dog was actually a Staffordshire Terrier not a Bull Terrier.

Bull Terriers have been in a number of movies throughout the years.
Its a Dog's Life in 1955
The Incredible Journey in 1963
Patton in 1970
Baxter in 1989
Toy Story in 1995
Oliver Twist in 2007
Frankenweenie in 2012
If you did not know about the breed before, you know a little now.

A Disclaimer here. I am not recommending this dog breed. The Did You Know Series of post are meant as information about unique or less known breeds.
I recommend adopting dogs from Shelters or Rescues.
If you ever see a Bull Terrier in a shelter, let me know. I would be surprised.
